What’s even better is that the story of Ghostrunner and its top-notch gameplay is wrapped up by an incredible composite score and stunning cyberpunk visuals. Gameplay is king in Ghostrunner, and for good reason – it’s some of the best in-game movement and combat out there.
It’s exhilarating, and every time I complete a successful encounter, I feel like a parkour god. As such, you will find yourself locked in a run that you think might work, trying again and again until you find success and defeat every enemy in the room. If you miss a beat, you will most likely get shot and die.

You have to learn how to jump around the stage, grapple with hangers or grind into the rails just like Sonic – Reach the enemy here before overtaking the enemy there. There is an optimal path for every encounter, but it’s not the only solution, which I appreciate. However, Ghostrunner must be treated as a puzzle to really understand what each scenario is trying to teach you. “There are enemies here, so I will attack them here”, and so on. At first, you can view each battle or parkour scenario like a first-person shooter, similar to Call of Duty. But, like Katana Zero, which has the same one-hit mechanics, the game instantly loads you back at the start of the encounter, sending you right back into the action and removing any frustration you might feel. Ghostrunner is like Mirror’s Edge super fast responsive 3D Katana Zero. Mind you, this isn’t the deepest, most revealing story in the cyberpunk genre, but it’s more than possible, working because Ghostrunner’s focus is on its gameplay. Is it consciousness? Is it a heartbeat? Could you be human if most of your body were machines? Ghostrunner addresses these questions directly, and it delivers. The story has twists and turns, which I won’t reveal here, but at its core, it’s about a person struggling with what makes them human.
Ghostrunner, as the name implies, is about a ghostrunner who has been reactivated to take down a tyrannical leader in a cyberpunk metropolis ravaged by capitalism. Still, it was a seven-hour first-person samurai slash that I can’t wait to play again one day (fortunately, I have Project_Hel DLC released earlier this year to play so far). Sure, Ghostrunner isn’t a massive RPG that spans dozens of hours of content.
Two days later, I got credit for not only being the best cyberpunk game released in 2020 but one of my favorite games of all time. After reading about its PlayStation 5 upgrades, including 60 FPS ray tracing and 120 FPS modes, I decided it was time to get in. I wasn’t able to get back to Ghostrunner until last weekend. However, due to work/freelance obligations, I had to put it aside to work on, ironically, a large tutorial project. I played through several Ghostrunners when it was released in October 2020. It shouldn’t be because a much better cyberpunk game was released less than two months before it: Ghostrunner. Whether you’ve played the game on a powerful PC, a new-gen console, or experienced it on previous-generation hardware, there’s still a good chance that the cyberpunk town of that year was for you. deceitful, dishonest and disrespectful to consumers. CDPR chose not to provide reviewer codes for those consoles ahead of time, as the studio chose not to actually talk about the last-gen versions of Cyberpunk 2077. You may already know the story of how it happened – it’s not a good game to play on the last generation console.

However, getting an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 around the time Cyberpunk 2077 is released in 2020 is a challenge, and many people have to play CDPR’s latest RPG on last-gen consoles. I played it on the Xbox Series X when it first came out, and it ran well enough that I could hit the credits thinking I’d just finished a fun game that I’m glad I played. However, it is not CD Projekt Red that defines the huge generation of games (and admittedly, many of us are fans) backing it. 2020 was an important year for the Cyberpunk genre in video games as the much-anticipated (and long-developed) Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released that year.
